One of our Gamma class members, Oscar Wu, graduated in Spring 2014 with a degree in Computer Information Systems and a minor in Management. He's currently working at Baxalta Incorporated as a Technical Project Manager in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) support and infrastructure. Oscar shares wonderful words of advice for current PSE members below.
"Having a job secured well before your college graduation is the ideal scenario to be in. Shortly after graduating, I joined Baxalta Incorporated (now spun-off from Baxter International) as a member of the IT Development Program (ITDP). Baxalta makes biopharmaceutical products that save and sustain patients’ lives. The ITDP is a three-year rotational program for recent college grads, in which you will have 3 different jobs in 3 years; this is a very attractive and unique opportunity to cultivate growth and become well-rounded in tangible and intangible skills. I’ve really come a long way since I started. My first rotation consisted of being a project manager for a $1.4 million hardware refresh project for Enterprise Platforms at Baxter. I’ve experienced the highs and lows, but was ultimately able to lead the project in a favorable direction, and complete various milestones. For my 2nd rotation, I’m working at our Los Angeles manufacturing plant supporting Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) software as well as our local infrastructure/networking team.
Our Vice President of Human Resources, Koyo Takahashi, is the Amazon Brand Ambassador on campus. Koyo is in his junior year as a Marketing Management major. It's great to see that he can apply what he's learned from Amazon to his professional life. Keep up the great work, Koyo!
Did you know that two of our members from Zeta class interned at the same company this summer? One of them happens to be Danielle Kellum! Danielle spent this summer interning at Aki-Home Furniture and Home Decor as a Marketing and Visual Merchandising intern. Danielle is entering her 4th year at Cal Poly Pomona and majoring in Marketing Management. PSE props, Danielle!
"My time at Aki-Home as their summer intern has been such a wonderful blessing. I worked in the Marketing and Visual Merchandising department. I was able to get real hands on experience about the field I was studying. I was also able to apply lessons from my classes to the job. My staff were always positive reinforcers and were never hesitant to help and guide me. I've learned how to think ahead rather than always in the moment, play with many different ideas to gain consumer attention. I worked on many projects that such as the 2016-2017 Style Guide, which I book over 300 pages of products, colors and trends for the upcoming year. Although, Aki-Home made me realize that retail marketing was not the route for me, the experience and knowledge I gained from their mentoring will always be with me."
"I'm currently a Sales Development Representative at Nutanix. Nutanix is a software-defined hyperconverged datacenter solution. We're what I like to call a grown-up startup. The "Nutanix family" is hardworking, passionate, dedicated, and upbeat. I love this industry, we have a beautiful blend of genius engineers and brilliant sales/marketing people who are passionate about our product. The tech industry is constantly changing, upgrading, developing, getting leaner and meaner. That forces us to continuously learn. It keeps you on your toes, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Being a member of PSE, I learned how to work with a team and accomplish a common goal. Being the president of Beta Kappa, I learned how to sell our vision, lead, and be results-oriented. Pi Sigs, continue working hard, being passionate, and track your success. Then, when it comes time, market yourself. Don't ever be a filler person! We've come a long way as a chapter, and I am so excited to see where we can go."
