Kicking off Spring Quarter with a Member Spotlight on Carmen Ng! She's currently a 4th year studying Computer Information Systems and from our most recently initiated class, Eta. Carmen is interning at Aflac in Pasadena as a Web Development Intern. Read about her internship experience and how PSE taught her to never pass up on any opportunity!
"I started as a Web Development Intern for Aflac’s Pasadena location in January. Throughout the past couple of months, one of Seattle’s offices and our Pasadena office have been piloting the rebranding of our offices from Aflac to Everwell. Everwell is Aflac’s own private exchange program that is aimed towards small businesses over a portable, paperless, and web-based business platform. Rather than operating as Everwell under the brand of Aflac, our goal is to have Everwell operate independently. Being thrown in to the middle of this process as an intern is quite challenging, but I have learned a lot in the time that I have been here thus far. I was able to participate in meetings with the District Coordinator, create and build web designs, and take a role in a huge project that we are currently working on.
When I applied to this internship, I did not get a response until an entire year later. At first, I was hesitant about accepting their interview offer because it seemed so sudden. One thing that PSE has taught me is to never back down from an opportunity. So I showed up for the interview and received the internship offer the next week. Being surrounded by hard-working and driven individuals in PSE really influenced me to push myself harder. Had I not joined PSE, I might have never stepped out of my comfort zone and gone for the interview. Although this internship is only a fifteen-week program, I am grateful to have gained these experiences and will continue to build upon them."
Our Vice President of Human Resources, Koyo Takahashi, is the Amazon Brand Ambassador on campus. Koyo is in his junior year as a Marketing Management major. It's great to see that he can apply what he's learned from Amazon to his professional life. Keep up the great work, Koyo!
Did you know that two of our members from Zeta class interned at the same company this summer? One of them happens to be Danielle Kellum! Danielle spent this summer interning at Aki-Home Furniture and Home Decor as a Marketing and Visual Merchandising intern. Danielle is entering her 4th year at Cal Poly Pomona and majoring in Marketing Management. PSE props, Danielle!
"My time at Aki-Home as their summer intern has been such a wonderful blessing. I worked in the Marketing and Visual Merchandising department. I was able to get real hands on experience about the field I was studying. I was also able to apply lessons from my classes to the job. My staff were always positive reinforcers and were never hesitant to help and guide me. I've learned how to think ahead rather than always in the moment, play with many different ideas to gain consumer attention. I worked on many projects that such as the 2016-2017 Style Guide, which I book over 300 pages of products, colors and trends for the upcoming year. Although, Aki-Home made me realize that retail marketing was not the route for me, the experience and knowledge I gained from their mentoring will always be with me."
For those of us at Cal Poly Pomona, we still have four more weeks until school starts. This week we are focusing on one of our members, Joseph Gaite, who believes that he wouldn't be where he is today if it weren't for PSE. Joseph is currently interning at Integra Realty Resources as a Researcher. He is in his 4th year and majoring in Finance, Real Estate, and Law. It's really great hearing how PSE has helped our members achieve their goals!
"Integra Realty Resources is the largest commercial appraisal firm in the United States. We provide commercial real estate market research, valuation, counseling, and consulting services. We work with a variety of clients from banks such as Chase Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo to small family owned law firms that manage family trusts. Interning here has been an amazing experience because my position is essentially the base of what goes on in my office. I have worked on tiny $100,000 pieces of land to $50,000,000 downtown apartment structures. When we get a new property to appraise, it is my job to find out as much information as I can about the property and build the skeleton of an appraisal report. It seems very tedious but I thoroughly enjoy the work because every single job is different. What I enjoy most about my job is that I get to see my work in an end product. It feels amazing knowing that the words I put on a report are actually going to our client who ever it may be. I can honestly say without PSE, I would not be where I am today. PSE put me in an environment where I am surrounded by the brightest most hard working people, and without those great people around me it would be extremely difficult to stay motivated and achieve my goals."
