This week we're highlighting one our newer members from Zeta class, Arthur Melendez. Arthur received the exciting opportunity to be a Professional Services Intern at the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri) this summer. He is an incoming senior majoring in Finance, Real Estate, and Law. We're so proud and excited to see what Arthur will do for our chapter in the future.
"Considering this is my first internship, I’ve learned a lot in the process of applying and working in a professional setting. Esri is a software development company that supplies geographic information systems software, webGIS, and GEO database management applications. Esri has introduced me to many systems and processes that I would not have learned in school. I didn’t even know what GIS was until after I applied and researched it. My mentor told me not to worry, as I would learn everything I need to know during the duration of my internship. I work most with SAP, which is a data processing software that allows businesses to manage operations and customer relations. Specifically, I work between the cost control and invoicing team within the Professional Services division of Esri. On a daily basis I contribute by analyzing project budgets and making sure our earned value doesn’t exceed the budget or time period allowed. After evaluation of the earned value I am required to review contracts and send invoices for each billing period. My experience thus far has been amazing! Esri brings interns from all over the world and I have met many people from very prestigious schools. They really try to bring everyone together with after-hour events and mixers. The highlight so far was their 2015 User Conference where they took the team down to the San Diego convention center and allowed us to network with companies that implement Esri's software into their operations. I would have to say that Esri set the bar for future internships and I would definitely recommend them!"
